The mother of the Beckemeyer toddler that was struck and killed Monday was driving the car that hit the child, according to Clinton County Sheriff Doug Maue.
Jensen D. Voss, 2, died near the intersection of Hays and Fourth streets about 3 p.m. after efforts to save the child were unsuccessful.
Investigators said the toddler was in the car and climbed out when his mother was closing the rear hatch. She did not realize the boy wasn’t in the car and began to drive away.
“We have a couple more interviews to do, then after that we will release more (information),” Maue said.

Veronica Resa, spokeswoman for the state Department of Children and Family Services, said Voss’ mother is the subject of an investigation involving an allegation of neglect. The investigation, launched in response to the child’s death, is part of a routine procedure, according to police. Resa noted that the agency has had no prior contact with the toddler’s family.
Maue said his department contacted DCFS.
“It’s our policy in any kind of child death to contact DCFS,” Maue said.
A family friend started a GoFundMe campaign Tuesday morning for the child’s funeral expenses. It can be found at gofundme.com/jensens-final-expenses.
Voss’ funeral arrangements were pending Wednesday morning, but condolences could be left on his memorial page at the Zieren Funeral Home.
