The same makeup artist who brought Star Trek characters to life for nearly a decade is sharing Hollywood’s makeup secrets at his new store and academy in Edwardsville.

Jeff Lewis, a six-time Emmy nominated makeup artist, recently opened the Makeup Department and Academy on Century Drive.

The small storefront has a classroom where Lewis will teach his techniques to metro-east residents who want to learn more about makeup.

“With our makeup store, what we’re trying to do is a lot of personal service,” Lewis said. “A lot of times you go into the stores and you have a 1,000 products. There are so many colors and so many choices. That’s good in one sense, but what you really want to get is the professional help to help you decide what looks best on you.”

The Makeup Department and Academy will do color matching for free when a customer is trying to find the right shade of the product.

Customers will find professional makeup lines created and used by makeup artists in the entertainment industry, Lewis said. Students and professional makeup artists can find special effects products there, too.

And if you’re an aspiring makeup artist who wants to take your skills to the next level, enrollment for the academy begins in January.

The shop will offer simple workshops for beginners and skilled makeup gurus before the first session of the academy begins.

“You can come in here, have fun and find the right product that fits you,” Lewis said on a recent Thursday afternoon.

In addition to classes, Lewis plans to offer a range of services. From wedding day makeup for brides and bridesmaids to Halloween makeup and tattoo coverups, he wants to appeal to a wide demographic.

Burn survivors or people battling cancer are among those he wants to help.

“A lot people are self conscious about how they look. Whether it be a birth mark or it maybe because of skin pigmentation,” Lewis said. “Makeup is something that can even things out and build someone’s confidence.”

From Hollywood actresses to everyday soccer moms, Lewis has worked on hundreds of people over the years. His Hollywood credits include: Star Trek, 13 Reasons Why, Up in the Air, Paranormal Activity and Prom. His makeup expertise ranges from beauty, theatrical, fantasy and special effects.

An Edwardsville native, Lewis started doing makeup as a student at Illinois State University.

“I thought I could bring a little bit of Hollywood back to Illinois,” Lewis said with a smile.
