Three local breweries are competing to earn the chance to brew a special 200th birthday beer for Illinois.

The state’s bicentennial is in 2018, and the winning entry in the IL Bicentennial Beer Competition at the Illinois State Fair will become the official craft brew of the bicentennial and will be distributed statewide.

Peel Brewing Co. in O’Fallon entered its Blood Orange Wheat; the Old Bakery Beer Company in Alton entered its Oktoberfest; and Excel Brewing Company in Breese entered its Eastside IPA. A total of 20 breweries across the state are entered in the competition.

“This is a fitting tribute to the number one industry in the state,” said Heidi Brown-McCreery, director of the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and a Bicentennial commissioner. “There’s already a good buzz about the Craft Beer Competition.”

The competition booth is inside gate one in the Happy Hollow from noon to 9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.
