ATV crash leaves 1 teen dead, 1 critically injured

A 13-year-old girl died in an ATV crash during the weekend, and another is critically injured in the hospital.

The girls, Raelyne Cheek and Erica Wallace, both from Medora, were driving their ATV eastbound on Challacombe Road around 4 p.m. Friday, approaching Illinois 267, and did not stop at a stop sign, Illinois State Police said. A tractor-trailer driven by 59-year-old Donald Young, couldn’t avoid the ATV and struck it.

Both girls were ejected from the ATV, police said. Raelyne was pronounced dead on the scene, and Erica was taken to St. Louis Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Erica has a broken pelvis, her brain is bleeding, is on a ventilator and was still in critical condition as of Monday evening, her mom said.

The crash is still under investigation by the ISP Crash Reconstruction Unit.

Both girls have GoFundMe accounts set up in their name — Erica’s for medical bills and Raelyne’s for funeral costs.
