Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White, an 83-year-old Alton native, will run for a sixth term in 2018, according to his campaign manager.
White has said twice, including in 2015, that he would not seek another term.
White said constituents asked him to run again, according to the Chicago Tribune.
“You cannot imagine how many people called, how many letters, how many emails,” White told reporters. “Every place I go, people ask me, ‘Please, don’t quit.’”
The Illinois Republican Party, in a press release, said White’s decision to run again is a “patronage gift” to House Speaker Michael Madigan, who also chairs the state Democratic Party.
White was first elected to the office in 1998. He now resides in Chicago.
