Police say a 50-year-old Mattoon woman jumped from a moving vehicle on Interstate 55 and died Wednesday after being struck by multiple cars on the highway.
A preliminary investigation indicated Lisa M. Lazar was sitting in the back seat of a 2008 Cadillac — with two Mattoon men in the front of the car — when she became upset during an argument and jumped out, Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said.
The men in the Cadillac went to a nearby Fairmont City motel and called 911 minutes before 1 a.m., according to Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr.
There are two motels located near the Illinois 111 exit on I-55 — the Royal Budget Inn and Indian Mound Motel. However, it was not clear where the man went to call 911.
Dye said it was unclear how fast the driver of the 2008 Cadillac was traveling when the woman left it. She was struck by multiple cars on southbound I-55 near Illinois 111, west of Cahokia Mounds.
Dye said the investigation was being handled by the state police investigations unit because of the “possible criminal nature of the crash.”
Approximately 3 miles of highway was shut down while the accident was investigated. The road was reopened before 5 a.m., Fox 2 reported.
State troopers responded to the crash with Abbott Ambulance, Fairmont City Fire Department and Caseyville, Centreville and Fairmont police departments.
