Service: Member of merchant navy supporting allied efforts during World War II. Torpedoed on Dec. 29, 1942, aboard the Baron Cochrane. Survived more than two days in a raft, then returned to service. Member of the 101st Airborne during the Korean War, fighting at the Yalu River and Chosin Reservoir.

Personal: Born in Waterford, Ireland, the oldest of nine siblings. On his own at age 14. Emigrated to United States in 1947. Joined U.S. Army despite being an Irish citizen. Became a U.S. citizen in 1952. Married to Virginia in 1953, raised four children. Former meat cutter for Tri-City grocery store and other local markets.
