Eight people — seven adults and a child — were displaced after a fire damaged the home where they live in the 700 block of North 52nd Street on Tuesday.

East St. Louis Fire Chief Jason Blackmon said crews arrived at the home to see heavy smoke and fire in the front portion of the one-story home. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, but its cause remains unknown, Blackmon said. He said the fire likely started in the front of the home and that the rear of the home was not seriously damaged.

Blackmon said none of the eight residents were hurt in the fire, and no injuries to firefighters were reported.

The Red Cross is assisting the family with temporary housing, food and clothing.
