Belleville man chased by dog, hit by tractor-trailer dump truck

Police say a Belleville man is fortunate to be alive after he was chased by a dog and then struck by a tractor-trailer dump truck.

According to Illinois State Police reports, Andreaus Washington Jr. was walking on Camp Jackson Road in Cahokia at just before 5 p.m. Wednesday when a large dog burst out the front door of a residence and chased him into the street.

“The dog ran at him in an aggressive manner,” Illinois State Police spokesman Calvin Dye Jr. said. “Washington ran backwards out onto the roadway in attempt to avoid the dog and was struck by the truck, causing him to be seriously injured.”

Washington was transported by ambulance to a St. Louis hospital. Police said doctors there determined Thursday evening that Washington did not have any injuries that are considered to be life-threatening. But more specific information about his condition was not released.

It was unclear Thursday morning if the owner of the dog would be cited for failing to control the animal. It was also unclear what happened to the dog.

The truck driver, whose identity was not released by police, is not expected to be ticketed. Police said there was little that he could have done to avoid the accident.
