Three propane tanks fell from a truck traveling on I-255 in Cahokia Wednesday night.
The tanks, similar in size to fuel tanks seen on farms and businesses, fell shortly after 10 p.m. from a truck headed south near the Camp Jackson Road.
According to police radio transmissions, officers who obtained shipping information from the truck determined the tanks were empty and posed no hazard to anyone living nearby even though Cahokia 911 dispatchers received numerous calls from residents reporting a strong smell of propane.
One tank ended up in the ditch to the west of the southbound lanes, another came to rest in the roadway and the third ended up in the median.
All southbound lanes were closed for over an hour before the tanks were reloaded.
No one was reported injured. Additional details were not available because access to the scene was limited and police couldn’t be reached for comment.
