A 21-year-old East St. Louis man faces 20 to 60 years in prison after pleading guilty to the murder of another East St. Louis man in 2014.

Montrell Spencer pleaded guilty Monday to the first-degree murder in connection with the killing of Leon Lucas Jr. in February 2014. Sentencing for Spencer is set for June 2.

East St. Louis Police Chief Michael Floore said police went to North 23rd Street to investigate an aggravated battery. When the officers arrived they found a man inside a car; the driver-side and the passenger-side windows of the vehicle had been shot out.

The warrant charging Spencer said he "without lawful justification commmitted acts knowing such acts created a strong probability of death or great bodily harm to Leon Lucas Jr.”

Illinois state Police and East St. Louis police investigated the case. Assistant State's Attorney Stever Sallerson prosecuted the case.
