Granite City church commemorates Armenian genocide

St. Gregory Armenian Apostolic Church at 1014 Pontoon Road in Granite City will host a ceremony at 6 p.m. Friday to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Armenian genocide that began on April 24, 1915, in Istanbul.

The original St. Gregory Church bell will be rung 100 times to mark the anniversary. The church has invited people to ring the bell in honor of their ancestors who either died in the genocide or survived it.

Armenians say 1.5 million people were killed between 1915 and 1923 by the Ottoman Turkish government. The Turkish government does not acknowledge a genocide occurred.
