A wrong-way driver hit a Cahokia police car Friday afternoon on Interstate 255, just north of Illinois 157, according to police.

A witness reported the accident around noon, Illinois State Police Trooper Calvin Dye Jr. said. The driver was driving northbound in the southbound lane near milepost 14 when officers responding to the call located him. He struck a Cahokia police car before stopping.

“Amazingly, no one was injured,” Dye said.

The driver did not appear to be impaired, Dye said. The driver was charged with driving the wrong way and failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident. His name was not immediately available.

Dye noted this is the 277th accident in District 11 since the beginning of 2018. While those numbers may seem high, Dye recently told the News-Democrat they are not unusual for the area.

District 11 covers Bond, Monroe, Madison, St. Clair and Clinton counties.

Last week, a Pontoon Beach officer was critically injured in an accident on Illinois 111 just south of New Poag Road after a pickup swerved over the center lane and collided head-on with the patrol car. The driver of the pickup truck, a 33-year-old man from South Roxana, died at the scene of the accident.
