Father charged with misdemeanor in ATV crash that injured three kids

The father of one of three boys injured in an ATV crash is being charged in the accident.

Eric S. Long, 47, of Assumption, Illinois, owned the all-terrain vehicle that crashed in January in rural Christian County. One of the boys was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency surgery to release pressure on his brain, according to the State Journal-Register. The other two boys were treated and released at regional hospitals.

Long has been charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, a Class A misdemeanor. He could serve up to a year in the county jail.

According to the State Journal-Register, the ATV was traveling at a high rate of speed Jan. 20 as it left a rural road and crashed in a ditch, flipping over several times and coming to a rest upside down. None of the boys were wearing helmets, and the ATV should not have been on the roadway or operated by middle-schoolers, according to the county sheriff.

A 13-year-old was also cited for improper operation of an ATV on a roadway, according to the Herald & Review.
