A Belleville woman was seriously injured after her car crashed into a tractor trailer early Friday morning at the Interstate 64 and Illinois 4 interchange.

Candice Kehoe, 33, was flown by helicopter to Saint Louis University Hospital after her 2016 Nissan Versa collided with the semi, according to police.

Witnesses reported that the semi, hauling a refrigerated trailer, stopped at the intersection from the westbound exit off I-64 onto Illinois 4 at about 7:20 a.m., according to Lt. Kevin McGinnis, of the Mascoutah Police Department.

The tractor-trailer’s driver, St. Louis resident Hamdija Efendic, then pulled out onto the road, and Kehoe hit the trailer with her Nissan Versa and went underneath the trailer, McGinnis said.

Kehoe was conscious and talking at the scene, police said.

Efendic was cited for failure to yield at a stop intersection.

The crash at Illinois 4 and I-64 jammed traffic along the state route but not the interstate for about an hour, Mascoutah police said. All lanes were reopened by about 8:30 a.m.
