One man died and another suffered life-threatening injuries in a shooting in Carbondale late Thursday night.
Carbondale Police were called to a Wall and Mill streets in the southeastern part of the city at about 11:30 Thursday night for a shooting. They were flagged down by people who led police to a gunshot victim, said Sgt. Guy Draper of the Carbondale Police Department. That man was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
At about the same time, another man was found, shot, who had been in a car crash. Draper said initially the police considered it two separate shootings but now believe they are connected. The man who was in the car crash had surgery at a Carbondale hospital and was later taken to a St. Louis hospital with life-threatening injuries, Draper said.
At least two people were in the other vehicle in the crash; one was taken to a hospital for "minor complaints," Draper said, and the other declined medical treatment. Police did not say how many people were in the vehicle with the gunshot victim.
Police were not yet releasing the identities of the people who were shot. The investigation was ongoing and police are not providing more details on Friday morning.
