78-year-old fatally struck by car in Granite City

An elderly pedestrian was struck and killed by a car Tuesday evening in Granite City.

The Granite City Police Department responded to West Pontoon Road near Rode Avenue and found that a vehicle had hit a pedestrian, later identified as 78-year-old Robert Mason, according to a news release from the department.

Mason, who was from Granite City, was seriously injured when he was struck, and was transported to Gateway Regional Medical Center, where he later died.

The police department and Madison County Coroner's Office were investigating the crash Wednesday.

Lt. Nick Novacich said no further information was available as of Wednesday afternoon.
