The death of a 38-year-old man is under investigation after he died while in the custody of the Venice Police Department, the Madison County Coroner's office said.
Clifton C. Lovett, 38, of Alton, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at Gateway Regional Medical Center in Granite City after he was found unresponsive and not breathing in his cell at the Venice Police Department, Coroner Stephen Nonn said in a news release.
Lovett was found in his cell at 2:55 a.m. and pronounced dead at 4:04 a.m.
Lovett had been arrested by Venice police Tuesday for driving under the influence and on a weapons charge, the coroner's office said. At the time of his arrest, a female passenger in his vehicle was transported to the hospital for symptoms of an overdose, the coroner's office said.
