A two-truck accident killed a Highland woman just after 4 a.m. Friday on U.S. 40 at Kennedy Lane, just west of the park-and-ride in Highland.

The accident killed 45-year-old Charlene Johnson and sent 36-year-old Wayne Stayton, of Collinsville, to St. Joseph's Hospital in Highland with a broken leg, according to Illinois State Police Capt. Timothy Tyler. He was then taken to Saint Louis University Hospital in St. Louis.

According to Tyler, Stayton was driving a truck east on U.S. 40 near Kennedy lane when he crossed over the center lane and collided with Johnson, who was driving her truck westbound on U.S. 40.

Tyler said Stayton told police had had been speeding.

The park-and-ride remained open to commuters but was only accessible from the east, according to a Highland Police Department Facebook post. U.S. 40 was closed both ways early Friday from Kennedy Lane to Motel Road.

It was estimated to be be shut down for several hours and was still closed as of 10 a.m.

Illinois State Police were at the scene Friday morning working on reconstructing the accident as part of an reckless homicide investigation.
