Couch remains in police custody and is currently hospitalized for unrelated health issues, according to Perry County Sheriff Steve Bareis.
The stabbing took place in a rural area, the sheriff said, and there were witnesses to the attack. The men knew each other but are not related or housemates.
Officers from Perry County, Steeleville, Randolph County and the Conservation Police responded to the stabbing.
Bareis said the call went out to "any officer that was available," which accounted for the number of departments that responded.
"We're more likely in our area to find a Conservation Police than a state trooper," he said.
