Mattoon teen dies after car collides with Amtrak train

A 16-year-old Mattoon High School student died Friday morning in a car accident involving a train in Humboldt, according to the Coles County Coroner.

John Nisbet III of Humboldt died at the scene of the accident, according to a Journal Gazette & Times-Courier report.

The accident scene was cleared around 11:40 a.m. Friday, after the Amtrak train appeared to push the vehicle at least two blocks after the two collided.

No other injuries were reported, according to the Journal Gazette & Times-Courier story.

Nisbet was an honor student at Mattoon High School, played junior varsity tennis and was a member of the chess team, according to Mattoon School District Superintendent Larry Lilly.

"We send our sympathies, support and prayers to the family and friends of John Nisbet III," Lilly wrote in a Facebook post. "Our school family has experienced this loss as well. We are all hurting."

Local clergy, counselors and social workers were available to the school's student and staff.

"As we have done in the past, our school district stands ready to help our students, staff and families in their time of need," Lilly wrote.
