One injured in car crash that shut down Illinois 13 near New Athens

All traffic on Illinois 13 near New Athens was shut down for about an hour on Thursday afternoon as fire crews attended to a severe two-car accident at South Van Buren Street and Keim Road.

Just before 2:30 p.m., a driver in one of the vehicles experienced a medical issue, causing him to crash into another car that was stopped at park sign in front of him, Capt. Justin Majzel of the New Athens Fire Department said.

The cars crossed the highway line and landed into the opposite, westbound lane, Majzel said. Fire crews shut down all lanes of the highway while they worked to clean up the crash. It was reopened around 4 p.m.

According to Majzel, one person was flown to the hospital with a head injury.

This scene of a vehicle in a ditch on South Belt East in Belleville was a familiar sight throughout the metro-east in December as a wintry mix made driving difficult. Road crews are gearing up for up to a quarter-inch of ice Friday.
