The West Nile virus has been discovered in Edwardsville.
Madison County Department of Public Health officials informed the city the virus had been discovered Wednesday. It wasn’t clear whether a batch of mosquitoes tested positive for the virus or if it was found in a dead animal.
The virus has already made its appearance in the metro-east this summer, with mosquito batches testing positive in Belleville, O’Fallon and Waterloo.
According to Illinois Department of Public Health figures, the virus has been discovered in 24 Illinois counties this year, up from nine counties at the beginning of July. Five dead birds and 117 batches of mosquitos have tested positive for the virus, but there have been no human cases recorded.
