Fatal crash near Damiansville closes 14-mile stretch of I-64

A three-vehicle crash that left one person dead also closed a long stretch of Interstate 64 for more than six hours Tuesday.

Clinton County Coroner Philip Moss confirmed Tuesday afternoon that one person died in the crash. He said three vehicles were involved. Moss did not identify the deceased because authorities had not yet notified any family members of the death.

It’s unclear what caused the three vehicles involved to crash at the 34 mile marker near the Damiansville exit. Information about additional injuries was not available.

Illinois State Police said the crash occurred in the eastbound lanes at 11:02 a.m. The crash forced a closure of 14 miles of eastbound lanes as crews tended to the crash scene. Traffic was rerouted between New Baden at the 27 mile marker and Okawville at the 41 mile marker using Illinois 161 and Illinois 160/177. State police expected those lanes to reopen by 6 p.m.
