Sunny start to new year gives area opportunity to dry out

Several days of dry weather are in the works for the metro-east, giving historically high area rivers a chance to finally start to recede.

The Mississippi River is expected to crest Friday at 42.58 feet at St. Louis Friday and then start to go down Saturday, dropping below major flood stage of 40 feet by Monday.

The new year will get off to a sunny start Friday with clear skies and a high of 38 in the metro-east.

That’s exactly the average high temperature for the first day of the year in the St. Louis metropolitan area, according to the National Weather Service.

Skies will remain mostly clear Friday night when the low will drop to 24.

The weekend forecast calls for a high of 40 Saturday under sunny skies and clear skies with a low of 23 Saturday night.

On Sunday, skies will be sunny with a high of 41. Sunday night will be mostly clear with a low of 21.
