The first birth of 2016 in the metro-east was almost a 2015 baby.
John Harrison Lauth was born to Stephanie and John Lauth just minutes after the new year arrived, at 12:08 a.m. on New Year’s Day. He weighed 7 lbs., 5 oz. and was 20 inches long.
Stephanie, a dental assistant in O’Fallon, and John, an evening supervisor at Southwestern Illinois College, were expecting John Harrison, their first child, on Jan. 17, though he came early.
The birth was a “slow go,” said Stephanie Lauth, but there were no complications.

The parents emphasized how thankful they are to the Memorial Hospital staff. Stephanie said they were “fantastic” and “very helpful.”
The nursery is ready, Stephanie said, and relatives gave a few gifts to the newborn. Her mother gave her christening outfit, and John’s mother gave his old Christmas stocking.
The family returns home on Sunday.
