Firefighters called out to power plant in Baldwin

Multiple fire departments were called out to assist personnel at the Baldwin Energy Complex on Friday morning following a report of a coal fire. However, no injuries have been reported, and plant operations have not been effected.

David Onufer, spokesman for Texas-based Dynegy which owns and operates the plant, said a bunker fire occurred in unit one. “It was in an area that wasn’t in operation at the time of the fire,” he said. “It’s one of those things — coal can catch fire.”

Although, he said fires like these are “rare.”

Additional fire departments were called in as a precaution, according to Onufer. “We want to be as safe as possible,” he said.
