The village of Worden will host its fifth annual “Patriots Day” celebration at Worden Community Park, 419 E. Kell St., on Saturday, Sept. 17.
New this year, will be a 5K race on Saturday, Sept. 17 to benefit the charity, Burn Camp. The camp is overseen by the non-profit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, which holds annual camp outings for children who have been a victim of fire burns. Register at active.com. Cost is $35. Pre-race check-in will begin at 8 a.m. Be sure to bring your IDs and waivers to the check-in tables. Participants will be able to pick up their race packet when they check-in.
The “Worden Wiffle War 2” will run from noon to 6 p.m. Teams of four will play a Wiffle ball tournament. Each team will be guaranteed a minimum of two games. Cost is $40 per team. There will also be live music, kids activities, and the day closes with fireworks.

Also included at Patriots Day will be the “Keep Calm and BBQ” cook-off, which is sanctioned by the St. Louis BBQ Society. Festival-goers will also be able to purchase competition barbecue on Saturday.
There will be $4,000 up for grabs in the BBQ competition, which will feature four meats: brisket, chicken, ribs and pork. The park will open at 8 a.m. on Saturday for set-up. Official turn-ins will be on Sunday. There will be a free buffet breakfast on Sunday morning for competitors, provided by the village of Worden.
Cost for vending teams is $200 and $150 for non-vending teams. Entry fee includes a 20-by-20- foot space and access to water. There is no electricity, but generators are allowed. Spaces will be pre-assigned. Additional space is available. RVs and big rigs are welcome. There are field lights for night activities and security.
On Saturday, there will be an extra “Free-for-All Cookoff” featuring pork steaks, chef’s choice and margarita categories. Cost for the Saturday night competition is $30. Turn-in will be at 8 p.m. There will be a 50-50 payback.
