Sewer charge can be deducted to fill pools
Any Alhambra resident filling a swimming pool over 1,000 gallons can receive a deduction on their sewer charge by contacting the village hall at 488-3505 prior to filling the pool.
Hope For Heroes Walk is Saturday
Madison County Association for Home and Family is sponsoring a “Helping Hand” walk May 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Gardens at SIUE. This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the beautiful gardens at SIUE, get your exercise and walk for a disabled veteran. All money raised will be given to Hope for Heroes to be used as needed to build ramps and revamp homes for disabled veterans. For further information, contact Vi at 618-254-0368.
Centennial Beard contest planned
Judging for the beard-growing contest will be held at Grantfork Firemen’s Park on Oct. 1 at 1 p.m.
There will be a registration fee of $5 for the first division entry and $2 for each additional division entry.
Divisions will be:
▪ Longest Beard
▪ Longest Mustache
▪ Best Looking Goatee
▪ Best Looking Beard
▪ Best Looking Mustache
▪ Most Colorful Beard; and
▪ Scruffiest Looking Beard.
Entrants may sign up for as many divisions as they want. (No refunds).

The rules are easy. Everyone is welcome to enter. The first 25 entrees will be entered into a drawing for a participation prize.

City garage sale is May 13
The Troy city wide garage sale is set for May 13 from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. throughout Troy.
“By far, this is one of the most popular events that we put on,” said Dawn Mushill, executive director of the Troy/Maryville/St. Jacob/Marine Chamber of Commerce. “This is a great way to bring people to Troy and see what a great town it is.”
You can check out a list of registered Troy addresses that will be having at sale at troymaryvillecoc.com or call the chamber office at 667-8769. You can also download the chamber’s app by texting “tmsm” to 72727, which will help you not only find your sale, but determine what they are selling.
A number of people will also hold their sales at Tri-Township Park.
Anyone will be able to utilize e-cycling for electronics and paper shredding, courtesy of CJD E-Cycling and Shred-it. Items will be accepted between 9 a.m. and noon at the park. There will be a slight charge for some electronic items.
Troy firefighters to host chicken & beer dance
A chicken and beer dance to benefit the Troy Firefighters Association will be held May 20 at the Collinsville American Legion, 1022 Vandalia St. in Collinsville. Doors open at 6 p.m. Pre-sale tickets are available through any firefighter or call (618)-304-9016. Cost is $35 per couple or $20 individual. At-the-door prices are $40 per couple or $25 per individual. Chicken and beer are included. Bring your own sides. The band begins at 7 p.m. There will also be 50/50 raffle, booze raffle, and reverse raffle.
Fishing derby set for people with disabilities, their families
The fourth annual Matthew Deien Memorial Fishing Derby and Bingo Day for people with disabilities and their families will be held May 21. All ages are welcome. The outing is sponsored by Deien Chevrolet and Bernard Wempe.
This event will be held at the Breese Jaycee Park on Germantown Road in Breese from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Dinner will be served at 3:15, and drinks will be served throughout the afternoon. Fishing poles and bait will be furnished. Volunteers will be available to help anyone who needs assistance.
