Garden Club to host plant sale

The Highland Garden Club will be having a plant sale at Glik Park on June 3 from 8 a.m. until noon. A large number of plants will be available. Funds from this sale help the Garden Club continue its many projects at the Gardens of Glik Park and Lila’s Garden.

Stewards of Hope to host “Yard Sale Extravaganza”

Stewards of Hope will host its fifth annual Yard Sale Extravaganza at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Highland from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 2. There is no admission fee for buyers.

Register to sell your garage sale items by contacting Jennifer Whitten at (618) 363-5634 or jennifer.whitten@hotmail.com. For $25, sellers receive four large parking spaces and a $4 credit at the concession stand for the day. All your profits are yours to keep. The sale has had a great turnout in the past and sellers have been very happy with their results.

The event supports Operation Elba’s Orphans, which helps orphans in Venezuela, through Stewards of Hope.

Relay for Life

Register now for 5K Color Run

A 5K “Color Run” during this year’s Relay for Life in Highland will benefit the American Cancer Society and Highland Elementary’s Girls on the Run program.

The run will be from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday, June 24 during Relay for Life at Glik Park and will follow a course throughout the park. Powdered color will be sprayed at each kilometer. There are only two rules: wear white and finish plastered in color. Registration for the race ends on June 15. Cost is $20. Sign up online at runsignup.com. Packet pick-up will be held at the Korte Rec Center on Thursday, June 22 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Relay for Life opening ceremonies begin at 6:30 p.m. The walk/run track will be open until closing ceremonies at midnight. Food and beverages will be available for purchase, with the proceeds benefiting American Cancer Society Relay for Life.

Road Work

Baumann Road bridge at I-70 to close

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that Baumann Road will be closed at Interstate 70, approximately 1.5 miles north of Pierron, beginning Monday, June 5, weather permitting. Work is required to perform repairs to the existing structure and is expected to be completed by last summer.

Motorists should consider alternative route to avoid delays, watch for workers and use caution when traveling in the work zone area.

The contractor on this project is Killian Corp./Keely Sons Inc. Join Venture of Mascoutah. John Adcock is the supervising field engineer for IDOT. Those with questions concerning the project can call Adcock at 618-346-3352.


League of Writers to meet

The Highland League of Writers will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Monday, June 5 in meeting room No. 2 at the Korte Recreation Center in Highland. Making money with your writings will be discussed. Anyone interested in writing is invited to attend. Bring your ideas, plots, or thoughts up to several pages for a friendly critique. Poetry, memoirs, magazine, anything written are welcome. You can also come just to hear member readings. There are no dues, fees or assigned topics. Meetings are normally the first and third Monday each month. Faith Countryside Homes invites all seniors 60 and over to join them for their fun, food and companionship community meal program. Meals are served Monday through Friday, excluding holidays, in the Countryside Community Center, 1331 26th St. Reservations for the upcoming week should be made by 1 p.m. this Friday. Call 651-3293.
