Highland soldier ‘coined’ by secretary of defense and dines with sergeant major of the Army

Spc. Matthew Rinderer, a 2012 graduate of Highland High School and member of Company C, 1st Battalion in the 16th Infantry Regiment, returned to Fort Riley, Kan., on Feb. 24 from a deployment to the Middle East. His tour included time in Kuwait and more than six months in Baghdad, Iraq.

While in Baghdad, Rinderer was “coined” by former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel, as well as former Sgt. Major of the Army Raymond Chandler. Rinderer was honored for special achievements and recognition of his service in Baghdad, as well as his unit’s success and high moral.

Also while in Baghdad, he was selected to dine with Chandler as he made his last visit to Iraq before retiring from the position as the 14th sergeant major of the Army, the senior most enlisted service member in the U.S. Army. In that position, Chandler also served as the personal adviser to the chief of staff of Army.
