Police said one person was killed Thursday afternoon when train collided with a vehicle in eastern Madison County.
The accident occurred at the CSX Railroad crossing at Illinois Route 143 and Railroad Street in Pierron, which is on the border of Madison and Bond counties. A southbound freight train collided with a 2006 Dodge truck, which was westbound, investigators said. The crossing has signal lights and crossing arms. Police said the truck driver was attempting to go around the lowered arms when the accident occurred. The victim’s name was withheld, pending notification of family.
Debris from the truck was scattered for several hundred feet along the railroad tracks south of Route 143.
The crossing at Route 143 was not blocked, but was reduced to one lane with firefighters flagging traffic while Illinois State Police, CSX Railroad Police and corner’s investigators reconstructed the accident.
Another crossing just north of the accident site, at Baumann Road, was clear and traffic was flowing freely there.
