Benefit concert for Highland Mayor Michaelis
A “Vote for Joe” blues party to benefit Highland Mayor Joe Michaelis during his recovery from a broken neck and back will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday, April 17 at Michael’s Restaurant, 415 Broadway in Highland.
The night will feature a performance by Highland’s own Roland Johnson & Soul Endeavor, who were voted “Best R&B Artist” in the River Front Times. Cost is $100 per couple. There will be complimentary hors d’oeuvres, and a cash bar will be available.

Cut-A-Thon to benefit Olivia Genteman
Salon Beaux Cheveux, 810 Broadway in Highland, will hold a “Cut-A-Thon” to benefit Olivia Genteman, a Highland High School freshman battling cancer, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 16. No appointment is necessary. It’s first-come, first-served. There is a minimum $10 donation for a shampoo and cut. T-shirts will be sold for $10. You can also get violet hair extensions to show your support for those battling cancer; cost is also $10.
Partners for Pets cosmic bingo
Partners for Pets will hold a cosmic bingo on Saturday, April 18 at the Highland Knights of Columbus Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m., and bingo starts at 7:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per person. Register online at parntersforpetsil.org. Partners for Pets is a charitable, no-kill, pet rescue organization that serves Madison County.
SJH Auxiliary scrubs sale
The HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital (Highland) Auxiliary will host a “scrubs” uniform sale open to the public on Monday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and again from 7 to 9 p.m., and also on Tuesday, April 21 from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The “scrubs” sale will be located in the Sullivan Conference Room (No. 1143) in the Medical Office Building (MOB) on the new St. Joseph’s Hospital campus, 12866 Troxler Ave.
Attendees are encouraged to park in front of and enter through the MOB main entrance and then follow the hallway immediately to the left to locate the Sullivan Conference Room.
Health care industry employees and students are welcome to search through the various uniform and apparel offerings during this sale in supporting the Auxiliary’s mission to advance the healing ministry of Jesus Christ at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Highland.

HHS baseball team
selling Cardinals tickets
The Highland High School baseball team is selling tickets for the St. Louis Cardinals game against the Philadelphia Phillies, which will be played on Thursday, April 30 at 12:45 p.m. Immediately following, the HHS varsity Bulldogs will play the Waterloo Bulldogs. The Highland Jaycees will put on a cosmic bowling event at Hi-Top Bowl in Highland on Saturday, April 25 starting at 7 p.m. It will cost $50 per team, and teams should consist of four to five people. All proceeds will go to benefit the Highland police and fire departments.
Worden Fire Department chicken and beer dance
The Worden Fire Department will hold its eighth annual chicken and beer dance on Saturday, April 18 at the Edwardsville American Legion. Doors open at 6 p.m. Music will be provided by Doc Holiday from 7 to 11 p.m. Cost is $20 for single advance tickets or $25 at the door. Couple’s tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door. Contact any Worden firefighter or visit the department’s Facebook page for tickets. There will also be a 50-50 drawing, silent auction and wheel barrow of booze raffle.
Trivia Night to benefit Allen Warnecke Scholarship Fund
A trivia contest, raffle and auctions to benefit the Allen Warnecke Memorial Scholarship Fund is going to be held on Saturday, April 18 at the Aviston American Legion.
Doors for the fundraising event open at 5:30 p.m. Trivia starts at 6:30 p.m. There will be a $10,000 drawing after trivia. An oral auction takes place at 10 p.m.
The oral auction includes ticket packages for the St. Louis Rams, the St. Louis Cardinals and the St. Louis Blues Sub Zero Club, as well as a six-hour, all-inclusive pool party at the Holtmann House and an autographed Stan Musial baseball bat.
There will be other assorted event passes, golf items and sports memorabilia up for bid as well. Raffle tickets are now available for a $10,000 prize to be awarded at the event. All proceeds from the April 18 event will go to scholarship awards to deserving students.
The fee is $100 per table with a maximum of 10 players per table. There will be 50-50 raffle tickets available and a heads and tails game. Snacks may be brought in. Beer will be available for purchase at the bar.

Warnecke was an alumni of Central Community High School, graduating in the first year of its existence in 1971. He also was the first valedictorian in the district’s history. After graduating from college, he returned to his alma mater as a mathematics teacher and member of the coaching staff. In 1990, Warnecke was named the athletic director and remained a fixture in that role at Central until his death in April 2014.
Relay for Life
The Myeloma Maniacs Highland Relay For Life team will hold its fourth annual quarter auction on Thursday, April 23 at the Highland Knights of Columbus Hall. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the auction begins at 6:30 p.m. There will be baked goods will be for sale. Bring your own munchies. A cash bar will be available. All-in paddles are $25 each. Derby Dance Party
The Leaps of Love Derby Dance Party will be held on Friday, April 24 at Fairmount Park racetrack, located at 9301 Collinsville Road in Collinsville.
Doors open at 6 p.m. An appetizers buffet will be served from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Live music will be played by Living Loud, a classic rock band. In addition, there will be a cash bar and simulcast racing.
Derby attire is preferred. So ladies, don’t forget your hat, and gentleman, grab your bow tie. Prizes will be awarded to ladies for the best hat and gentlemen for best dressed.

HHS color guard quarter auction
To help purchased uniforms and equipment, the Highland High School color guard will be having a quarter auction fundraiser on Thursday, April 30 at the Highland Knights of Columbus Hall. Doors open at 6 p.m. The quarter auction begins at 7 p.m.
The $5 admission ticket includes one bidding paddle. An all-in paddle ticket can be purchased for $25 or two for $40 before the event from any color guard member or at It’s Party Time!, 919 Washington St. in Highland. There will be lots of great items for quarter bids, door prizes, a 50-50 drawing, Chinese raffle and snack and beverage concessions will be available.

Relay For Life wine tasting
The “Oldies but Goodies” Relay for Life Team (sponsored by the Highland News Leader) will host a wine tasting party at Michael’s Restaurant on Friday, May 1, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The wine presentation will be given by Jim Gutzler of Highland’s Tru-Buy, in cooperation with representatives of Southern Wine & Spirits. Hors d’oeuvres will be served at 6:30 p.m., with the wine presentation/tasting to follow at 7p.m.
The fun-packed evening includes wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and desserts, trivia, and a silent auction with lots of great items.
