The Highland Garden Club will meeting on Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at the Korte Recreation Center in Highland Mike Helman of the Cactus and Succulent Society will be the speaker.
Gateway East Artists’ Guild
The Gateway East Artists’ Guild to meet on Wednesday, May 6 at 6 p.m. in the PSOP/SWIC Building in downtown Belleville, 201 N. Church St. It’s the annual auction. Featured again this year for the silent auction are finished unframed original oil paintings by plein-air artist David Cornell. In the past, art supplies, finished works, books, plants and edible goodies have been available for the bidding. There will also be a monthly membership art competition and refreshments. International Women’s Organization
Nouf Alfjohani of Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, will be the featured speaker at the Tuesday, May 5 meeting of the International Women’s Organization (IWO) at Southern Illinois Univversity Edwardsville.
The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. in the Community Room of Eden Village, 200 S. Station Road in Glen Carbon. Look for blue sign out front of the Information and Administrative Office. You may also park on side of road next to blue sign.
Before coming to SIUE, Alfjohani received her bachelor’s degree in English literature in Saudi Arabia. Now at SIUE, she is studying for her master’s degree in teaching English as a second language. Nouf’s PowerPoint presentation will encompass her educational background, family, Muslim faith, the cultures and traditions in Saudi Arabia, Arabic weddings and hospitality. Nouf will be bringing Arabic coffee and some very unique dates that she brought from Saudi Arabia.
IWO provides cross-cultural opportunities, educational programs and social activities for American and International women of the metro-east area. Women gather and share life experiences; network; learn about other cultures and traditions; build new global friendships; and help create international understanding. IWO is a sister organization to the International Hospitality Program at SIUE and is affiliated with the SIUE Center for International Programs.
