Community Club meets

The Alhambra Community club met at Maedge’s Restaurant for its monthly meeting on Feb. 22. Vice president Rodney Knackstedt called the meeting to order with the Pledge to the Flag and the prayer. There were 30 members present.

Following the meal, president John Ernst had Sterling Schoen introduce the guest speaker, John Grindstaff. He spoke on his years working as a guard in several different prisons and told of the average day of a prisoner and the dangers of being a guard.

The secretary’s report was read, and a motion to accept was approved, followed by the treasurer’s report that was read and approved. Shirley mentioned that the club made $779 on the quilt.

Under old business, it was reported that there are four applicants for the $500 scholarship being given by the club. Freddie Riepshoff asked that members consider getting an outside person or group to determine the recipient of the scholarship. Knackstedt agreed and said with Alhambra being such a small town, and knowing all four of the young people who applied, it would be very difficult to choose one.

Riepshoff brought up that the fire department has someone from Madison County Regional Office of Education read its applications and determine who is granted the scholarship. Knackstedt said he would look into this and see if Madison County could get someone to determine the Community Club’s recipient. A motion was made and passed to do this.

Ernst mentioned the club needed to come up with an idea for a fundraiser at the homecoming. Shawn Lewis mentioned a dice game. Knackstedt is also checking into what it would cost to have a bingo game and the cost for a two-day license. Mindy will piece the quilt squares Dawna Mize donated together, but still needs somewhere to put the quilt up to get it quilted.

Knackstedt had a sample of some nice ink pens that will have “Community Club” written on them. It was agreed the club would purchase 100 of the pens.

A donation of $50 will be given to the Alhambra Jaycees to buy candy for the Easter egg hunts.
