Christ J. “Sonny” Schwarz, 79, of Grantfork died on Thursday, March 5, 2015 at his home.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland and from 8 to 9:30 a.m. on Monday, March 9 at Spengel-Boulanger Funeral Home in Highland. A funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, March 9 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Grantfork, with Father Pat G. Jakel, pastor, officiating. Burial will be in St. Gertrude Catholic Cemetery in Grantfork.
He was born on July 19, 1935 in Highland to Christian and Marie O. (Keller) Schwarz. He married Louise Sharon Kloss on Oct. 12, 1963 at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Grantfork, with Father Lawrence Auda officiating; she passed away on June 13, 1965. On Dec. 11, 1971, he married Emily Rose Knebel at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pierron; she survives in Grantfork.
Mr. Schwarz grew up north of Grantfork. He served six months in the United States Army Reserves. After his father’s death, when he was 21 years old, Mr. Schwarz began taking care of the family farm. He was “always” a farmer (usually grain) and still harvested a crop in the fall of 2014. He had also worked part-time for Leef Township for more than 25 years.

He loved having a large family and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He also enjoyed his dogs.
He was a member of St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Grantfork, Knights of Columbus Council 1510 (life member), the Grantfork Volunteer Fire Department (retired) and the Madison County Farm Bureau.
Other survivors include daughters, Tina M. Schwarz of Mason City, Ill., Debora R. Schwarz of Jacksonville, Ill., Brenda S. (Greg) Teakert of Creve Coeur, Mo., and Mary S. (Joe) Jackson of Pierron; sons, Kevin J. (Kris) Schwarz of Highland and Chris L. Schwarz of Dunlap, Ill.; grandchildren, Meredith J. Teakert of Creve Coeur, Mo., Jenna K. Teakert of Creve Coeur, Mo., Christian R. Schwarz of Highland, Emma R. Jackson of Pierron, Elizabeth R. Schwarz of Highland, Thomas J. Jackson of Pierron and Katherine M. Schwarz of Highland; a sister, MaryAnn E. (Jerry) Frueh of Alhambra; and a brother, Lawrence J. (Shirley) Schwarz of Grantfork.
He was also preceded in death by his father, who died on Nov. 3, 1956; his mother, who died on May 26, 2000; and a daughter, Jane F. Schwarz, who died on Sept. 11, 1979, at age 1.
Memorials may be made to the Grantfork Volunteer Fire Department, Siteman Cancer Center or St. Gertrude Catholic Church.
