Christine L. Holtgrave, 87, of St. Rose died Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Highland Health Care Center.
A funeral Mass was held on Monday, April 13 at St. Rose Catholic Church in St. Rose, with Father Edward Schaefer officiating. Burial was in St. Rose Cemetery. Moss Funeral Home in Breese was in charge of arrangements.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1927 in Pierron to William and Josephine (Holthaus) Schwierjohn. She married Erwin Holtgrave on Nov. 9, 1948 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Pierron. He preceded her in death on Sept.1, 1993.
Mrs. Holtgrave worked as a cook at St. Rose Grade School for eight years and was a homemaker.
She was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church and Ladies Sodality, Breese American Legion Post 252 Auxiliary, and the St. Rose Development Club and Senior Citizens. She enjoyed quilting, playing cards and bingo, but especially loved spending time with her family.
Surviving are her children, Leonard (Ruth) Holtgrave of St. Rose, Ronald “Moose” (Arlene) Holtgrave of St. Rose, Marilyn (John) Wolters of Highland, Kathleen (Gervase) Klostermann of St. Rose, Alfred “Sarge” (Diane) Holtgrave of St. Rose and Doris (Steve) Bogowith of Troy; 20 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Mary Zeisset of Cleveland, Ohio, Jean Holtgrave of St. Rose, Pat (Henry) Detmer of St. Rose, Pauline (Butch) Richter of Aviston and Cathy Holtgrave of St. Rose; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Susan Heldenbrand, and her husband, Thomas; a grandson, Terry Holtgrave; siblings, Joseph Schwierjohn, Helen Frey, Henry Schwierjohn, Gertrude Peters, Josephine Rehkemper, Katherine Wessel, Alphonse Schwierjohn, William Schwierjohn Jr., Clem Schwierjohn, and Agnes Schwierjohn; her father- and mother-in-law, William and Anna (Wilke) Holtgrave; and sisters- and brothers-in-law, Alvina Schwierjohn, Delmar Frey, Loretta Schwierjohn, Clem Peters, Ben Rehkemper, Vince Wessel, Betty Schwierjohn, Victor and Mildred Holtgrave, Clarence Holtgrave, Eugene Holtgrave, Gervase Holtgrave, Harold Zeisset, William Holtgrave Jr., and Helen and Greg Winkeler.
