Gerald E. “Jerry” Clayton Jr., 63

Gerald E. “Jerry” Clayton Jr., 63, of Pocahontas died on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in Belleville.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 23 at Meridith Funeral Home in Pocahontas. A memorial service will follow the visitation at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dave Trover officiating. Burial will be at a later date.

He was born on April 25, 1951 in Highland to Gerald Sr. and Martha (Burkhalter) Clayton Sr.

Mr. Clayton was an Army veteran and worked as a police officer for the Village of Pocahontas.

He worked as a prison guard for the Bureau of Prisons for 25 years. He was also a Western history buff and a collector of law enforcement memorabilia, which will be on display at Bob’s Civil War Fort Museum in Germantown. His favorite times of the year were Halloween, decorating a parade display, and Christmas, playing Santa Claus for many people.

He is survived by brothers and sisters, Eldon Clayton, Thomas Clayton, Eugene (April) Clayton, Nancy Clayton-Traub, Carol (Nick) Gregory, Kimberly May, and Frederick (Molly) Clayton of Pocahontas; nieces and nephews, Shauna, Kyle, Sheryl, Jason, Jeff, Tomi, Steven, Amy, Austin, Tiffany, Lucas, Nash; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and a niece, Katie Clayton.

Memorials may be made to the Diabetes Foundation or Down syndrome.
