The Highland High boys golf team won its final two matches of the regular season to finish with a stout 16-5 dual-match record.

First on Tuesday of last week at Highland Country Club, the Bulldogs were rude hosts after shooting a 171 to leave Pana (195) and Greenville (252) way back in the distance.

Next on Wednesday, Highland traveled to Oak Brook Golf Club and fired a 161 to edge Mississippi Valley Conference combatants Triad (164) and Waterloo (173).

All four Bulldog golfers finished within three shots of one another.

Highland was led by junior Ben Brauns with a medalist-winning round of 41.

Fellow junior Stephen Schniers was just one stroke back with a 42, and junior Connor Pinsker and sophomore Dylan Bargetzi rounded out Highland’s team score with matching round of 44.

Pana was led by Michael Hraback with a 44. Greenville’s low scorer with Sam Knebel with a 51.

Wednesday’s win in the triangle match at Oak Brook was played on the north course.

“It is an open-links format that proved to be tricky with the wind and cool temperatures,” Highland coach Brent James said. “The boys handled themselves well and navigated the course to a 161. This was enough to squeak out a victory over Triad (164) on their home course.”

This time it was Pinsker showing the way for Highland with a quality round of 39 to tie Triad’s Cam Lambert for second place.

“It was nice to see Connor step up big and shoot a 39,” James said. “I knew the match was going to be tight and that is just what it took to get the win.”

They finished just one shot off the pace of medalist Chris Lambert’s 38.

Also posting scores for HHS were Schniers (40), Brauns (41) and junior Brandon Munie (41).

Also scoring for Triad were Nick Bryan (40) and Tyler Flesher (47).

Waterloo received scores from Tre Wahlig (41), Tommy Carr (42), Tom Griffith (47) and Aaron Lloyd (53).
