Highland Splash skewers Kings Point Stingrays

The Highland Splash swam laps around the host Kings Point Stingrays the entire meet en route to scoring a lopsided road victory by the final margin of 410 to 107 last Thursday in Belleville.

Highland improved to 2-0 on the season and are coached by Alex Rinderer and Ryan Poss. The Splash thoroughly dominated each and every stroke throughout the meet en route to capturing first place in an eye-popping 55 of the 62 total events.

The Splash girls won by a convincing margin of 194 to 70 over their Kings Point rivals, while the Highland boys were even more dominant at a 216 to 37 margin.

The Splash swept all four meet-opening medley relays, as well as all 10 of each of the freestyle and breaststroke competitions before going on to in six of the eight individual medleys, nine of the 10 of each of the backstroke and butterfly races.

Highland closed out the meet by taking seven of the 10 freestyle relays.

The Splash broke five team records at the meet which is measured in yards.

Ben Walter, 14, won all three of his individual events while also shattering a Highland team record in each. He started out the evening by establishing a new standard time in the boys 13-14 100-yard breaststroke after stopping the stop watch with a record time of 1:08.55. Next, Walter was not only the fastest at the meet, but also in Splash team history in the 100-yard individual medley at 1:00.94. He closed out the night by winning the 50-yard butterfly with a new team record time of 27.37 seconds, which was also 5.50 seconds over the second-place finisher.

Ben Thomae, 18, set a new record en route to winning the boys 15-18 100-yard breaststroke with a new standard time of 1:04.21.

In addition, Thomae swam the anchor leg of Highland’s winning and record-breaking boys 15-18 200-yard freestyle relay. Thomae teamed up with Dylan Galbiati, Gunnar Kohlbrecher and Jonny Olson to post a Splash record time of 1:34.56.

Thomae also won first place in the boys 15-18 50-yard butterfly with a winning time of 26.72.

In addition to Walter, Highland had three other swimmers who swept all three of their individual event. The trio and the three events they won were as follows:

▪ Cam Runge in the boys 11-12 50 freestyle (31.26), 50 breaststroke (43.84) and the 50 backstroke (36.42)

▪ Tucker Stephens in the boys 9-10 25 breaststroke (19.17), 10-and-under 100 individual medley (1:22.83) and the 9-10 25 butterfly (16.66)

▪ David Kinscherff in the boys 8-and-under 25 breaststroke (27.34), 25 breaststroke (32.43) and the 25 butterfly (33.63)

In addition to Thomae, the Splash had seven other team members who won two of their three individual events:

▪ Alyssa Freimann in the girls 15-18 100 freestyle (1:04.09) and the 100 breaststroke (1:22.67)

▪ Madeleine Schmidt in the girls 13-14 100 freestyle (1:00.70) and the 100 backstroke (1:13.02)

▪ Anna Henke in the girls 11-12 50 breaststroke (40.53) and the 11-12 100 individual medley (1:21.16)

▪ Masyn Smith in the boys 11-12 100 individual medley (1:21.17) and the 50 butterfly (33.92)

▪ Ella Drysdale in the girls 11-12 50 butterfly (35.20) and the 50 backstroke (35.96)

▪ Abby Chalfant in the girls 9-10 25 freestyle (15.37) and th e25 breaststroke (18.29)

▪ Olivia Abraham in the girls 8-and-under 25 breaststroke (22.17) and the 25 butterfly (22.31)

(Events at this meet were competed in yards. There are three swimmers in total from both teams combined who score in each individual event, so one team is allowed to score its top two swimmers in any one individual event.
