The IHSA Boys High School Swim Sectional Meet was held Saturday, Feb. 21 at Eisenhower pool in Springfield, Ill. Highland was represented by sophomores Ben Thomae and Dylan Galbiati, and freshmen Gavin Kohlbrecher and Peyton Nagel. Each put up personal best times in their respective events.
Thomae made it to the podium twice after finishing fourth overall in both of his events; the 200 individual medley (2:03.92) and the 100 butterfly (55.55).
Galbiati took eighth in the 100 backstroke (100.36) and seventh in the 200 individual medley (2:09.79).
Kohlbrecher came in 14th in the 100 backstroke (1:04.25) and 10th in the 500 freestyle (5:29.45)
Nagel placed 16th in 200 freestyle (2:18.22) and 17th in 500 freestyle (6:22.21)
The boys are coached by Howard Harris of Greenville. The team rep and assistant coach is Annie Lutostanski.
Other Highland swimmers competing at the IHSA Boys Sectional Swim Meet were Gunnar Kohlbrecher, a sophomore representing Father McGivney Catholic High School in Maryville, and Adam Seger, a freshman representing Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese.
Gunnar Kohlbrecher was on the podium for the 500-meter freestyle after coming in third (4:52.69). He also finished fifth in the 50 freestyle (23.51)
Seger finished ninth in the 200 freestyle (1:56.14) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:05.60)
In addition to swimming on the Highland Splash summer swim team, the boys also swim for club teams in the winter. Nagel, Seger and Gavin Kohlbrecher swim for the Tri City YMCA Tidalwaves, and Gunnar Kohlbrecher, Galbiati and Thomae swim for the Edwardsville YMCA Breakers.
