Highland Splash reigns over Kingspoint, 444 to 73

The Highland Splash summer swim team served as rude hosts in their home opener as they took the sting out of the severely shorthanded Kingspoint Stingrays, 444 to 73, on Tuesday, June 21 at Highland Community Pool to remain perfect on the season at 3-0.

Next on Thursday, the Splash went on to sink the visiting Trenton Torpedoes 455 to 68. Then on Saturday, Highland rung up 396 team points to drown three opponents, the Paddlers Swim and Dive (78), the Splash City Gators (71) and the Swisa All Stars (40) to hike their flawless record to 7-0.

Results from both of those meets will be in next week’s edition of the Highland News Leader.

Against Kingspoint, Highland captured first place in an eye-popping 57 of 62 events, including sweeping all four meet-opening medley relays as well as all 10 backstroke events and all 10 of the meet-closing freestyle relays.

In addition, the Splash won nine of the 10 freestyle and breaststroke races while also claiming eight of the 10 butterfly competitions and seven of the individual medleys and.

Highland had four swimmers sweep all three of their individual events with first-place finishes:

▪ Victoria Thomae won the girls 15-18 100-meter freestyle (1:03.25), the 100-meter breaststroke (1:18.81) and the 100-meter individual medley (1:12.03)

▪ Trey Stephens won the boys 13-14 100-meter freestyle (1:05.76), the 100-meter backstroke (1:13.94) and the 50-meter butterfly (31.28)

▪ Tess Korte won the girls 13-14 100-meter freestyle (1:10.75), the 100-meter backstroke (1:28.47) and the 50-meter butterfly (33.51)

▪ Tucker Stephens in the boys 8 and under 25-meter freestyle (16.40), the 25-meter breaststroke (23.49) and the 25-meter butterfly (18.77)

The Splash had another eight competitors capture first place in two of their three individual events:

▪ Dylan Galbiati in the boys 15-18 100 breaststroke (1:18.74) and the 100 individual medley (1:08.15)

▪ Ben Walter in the boys 13-14 100 breaststroke (1:29.25) and the 100 backstroke (1:19.29)

▪ Galen Kohlbrecher in the boys 11-12 50 freestyle (32.91) and the 50 backstroke (41.33)

▪ Jude Henke in the boys 11-12 50 breaststroke (43.88) and the 50 butterfly (39.90)

▪ Anna Henke in the girls 9-10 25 breaststroke (21.72) and the 100 individual medley (1:40.63)

▪ Ryan Tolbert in the boys 10 and under 100 individual medley (1:54.75) and the 9-10 25 butterfly (17.78)

▪ Jackie Barkus in the girls 9-10 25 freestyle (20.35) and the 25 butterfly (18.77)

▪ Darby Stever in the girls 8 and under 25 freestyle (22.97) and the 25 butterfly (29.57)

Highland swimmers have already shattered Splash team records in seven different events in the first three meets this season.

The records already broken this season are as follows:

▪ Sean McGinley in the boys 8 and under 25 freestyle with a time of 16.35 seconds on June 14, 2016 to break the previous mark of 16.69 set by Garrett Plocher on June 16, 1992

▪ Tucker Stephens in the boys 8 and under 25 breaststroke with a time of 21.90 seconds on June 14, 2016 to break the previous mark of 22.65 set by Joel Mason on July 26, 2003

▪ Alyssa Freimann in the girls 15-18 50 butterfly with a record time of 32.50 seconds on June 14, 2016 to break the previous record of 32.59 set by Maryssa Beckman on July 19, 2008

▪ Ben Thomae in the boys 15-18 100 individual medley with a record time of 57.34 seconds on June 16, 2016 to break the previous record of 59.76 set by Ben Thomae on June 23, 2015

▪ The boys 8 and under 100 freestyle relay team of Sean McGinley, Ethan Walter, Dalton Balint and Tucker Stephens with a record time 1:14.08 on June 16, 2016 to break the previous record of 1:15.97 set by J. Cryder, B. Pye, D. Tebbe and Garrett Plocher on July 28, 1990

▪ Victoria Thomae in the girls 15-18 100 breaststroke with a record time of 1:18.81 on June 21, 2016 to break the previous record of 1:20.53 set by Chelsie Hahn on July 24, 2004

▪ Victoria Thomae in the girls 15-18 individual medley with a record time of 1:12.03 on June 21, 2016 to break the previous record of 1:13.36 set by Chelsie Hahn on July 24, 2004

(Events at this meet were competed in meters. There are three swimmers in total from both teams combined who score in each individual event, so one team is allowed to score its top two swimmers in any one individual event. Therefore, each team is guaranteed to score at least one point in each and every individual event.
