O’Fallon Township High School senior baseball standout Hayden Schaefer, an outfielder and middle infielder for the OTHS Panthers, has committed to attending McKendree University in Lebanon next year on a baseball scholarship.

“This is a great opportunity for Hayden. McKendree is a NCAA Division II baseball program that is eager to make the recent transition from NAIA to Division II baseball a successful one under first year head coach Danny Jackson. Hayden is hoping to go in and make an impact in the Bearcat program right away,” Jason Portz, OTHS head baseball coach, said in a released statement.

As a junior Schaefer hit .452 with 11 RBI’s and 3 HR as the teams left-fielder. In 2016 the Southwestern Conference Champion Panthers were nationally ranked, finishing 33-6 in the “Sweet 16” IHSA Class 4A playoffs.

“Coach Jackson is getting a player that will completely dedicate himself to their program and bring McKendree baseball a great deal of versatility. He has developed into an outstanding outfielder and could also be a very good collegiate middle infielder,” Portz said in a released statement. “Hayden has all the tools to be a complete player at the college level — he can run, throw, hit for power and average, plus he has a competitive streak in him that will drive him to succeed at the college level. This is a goal fulfilled for Hayden and we look forward to following him in his continued success at the next level of baseball after his senior year.”
