On the heels of the U.S. presidential election, the fourth-grade class of Sharon Ray at First Baptist Academy in O’Fallon recently learned about the election process.

The class held a mock election on Nov. 16 where students ran for the offices of president, governor and mayor. The fourth-graders brought in campaign materials including posters, buttons, pencils and candy bars, which featured slogans and the candidates’ names.

Students in the class listened to campaign speeches delivered by each candidate. They then cast their votes in makeshift booths with voter registration cards in hand. Following the election, the “elected officials” taught their classmates about the different branches of government.
