James J. Donovan, 76, of Belleville, born on April 12, 1938, in Anna, Ill., died Tuesday, April 7, at Memorial Hospital in Belleville.
James was a United States Army Reservist. He retired after 42 years as an engineer with Alton and Southern Railroad. James collected model trains and pocket watches. He loved to restore older model cars. He also loved to travel around the United States. James loved coffee, kids, dogs and was a generous, loving and patient man. He was loved by all.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Joan M. Donovan, nee Peifer; his parents, John F. and Evelyn F. nee, Culver Donovan, Sr.; and two brothers, John F. Donovan, Jr., and Anthony P. Donovan.
Surviving are his daughter, Beth (Gaines) Smith of Belleville; his grandchildren, Megan Smith and Bailey Smith; his loving, special friend, Joyce Gibbs of O’Fallon; two brothers, Patrick Donovan of Summerfield, Ill., and Michael (Gayle) Donovan of Lebanon; his sister, Sue Donovan McGary of O’Fallon; and his nephews, John Donovan, Jr.; David James, Keith James, Anthony James, Josh Donovan and Kyle Donovan.

Visitation was Saturday, April 11, at Union United Methodist Church in Belleville.
A memorial service took place Saturday, April 11, at Union United Methodist Church with Senior Pastor Edward Weston and Father Clyde Grogan officiating.
Interment followed at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Shiloh.
