O’Fallon Township High School senior Jack Bond took third place over the weekend in the 170-pound weight class at the IHSA Class 3A State Wrestling Tournament, held at the State Farm Center in Champaign on the campus of the University of Illinois.
Bond opened the tournament with a 21-9 major decision over Collin Rosenberg (21-15), a senior from Wheaton North High School.
In the second round, Bond defeated Ryan Vedner (41-6), a senior from Mount Prospect, by decision, 12-5.
That set up a semifinal match with Abe Assad, a junior from Glenbard North High School in Carol Stream. Assad had advanced to the match by defeating Kyle Quinn (36-14), a senior from Lincoln-Way West High School in New Lenox, by major decision, 13-1, in the opening round. Assad then pinned Ahmad Suleiman (34-8), a senior from Stagg High School in Palos Hills, at the 5:04 mark of their second-round match-up.
Bond fought hard. However, Assad, who went on to win the state title and finish the season with an unblemished record at 47-0, won their match by a 4-0 decision. Assad would go on to win the 170-pound state title by defeating Nate Jimenez (23-4), a senior from Marmion Academy in Aurora, by a 7-4 decision.
In the third-place bout, Bond would take on Jonathan Pullen (44-6), a senior from Joliet West. The tilt was a rematch of the sectional championship meet a week earlier in Alton. At the sectional, Bond won the final match over Pullen in overtime, 5-3. At state, Bond would win in regulation, with a 13-7 decision.
Bond finished the season with an overall record of 45-4.
