A fire that apparently started in a car in a garage heavily damaged a home in O’Fallon Saturday, but no one was injured in the blaze at 901 Silverlink Drive, the fire chief said.

Fire Chief Brent Saunders of the O’Fallon Fire Department said three adults and a teenager were able to safely escape after one of them spotted the fire in the garage while looking to see what caused a noise he heard.

Saunders said the first floor received heavy fire damage and the second floor and basement had heavy smoke damage. The fire spread from the garage into the first floor living area and caused so much damage that the residents will not be able to live there, Saunders said.

The State Fire Marshal was called to investigate because of the high amount of damage caused by the fire, Saunders said.

O’Fallon firefighters received the call at 11:13 a.m. and asked for assistance from the Fairview, Lebanon and Troy fire departments primarily because of the hot weather, Saunders said. The National Weather Service reported the temperature was 88 degrees in the metro-east at about noon. Firefighters from Scott Air Force Base and Mascoutah served as backups while O’Fallon firefighters were on the scene.
