More than 500 Team Scott and local community members gathered Sept. 22 to show support for the Bereda family who lost two children in a tragic vehicle accident this summer.
The event, organized by members of Maj. (Dr.) David Bereda’s unit—the 375th Aerospace Medicine Squadron—included a candlelight 5K run/walk at O’Fallon’s Rock Springs Park and featured the planting of two trees, a 70-candle cross, and music and prayers.
The major was not in the car at the time of the July 20 accident that occurred on I-70. His wife, Dr. Christina Bereda—the medical director at Express Medical Care in Fairview Heights—and 3-year-old Jorden survived with injuries; however, 1-year-old Finley and 5-year-old Brennen were killed.
“While it's so hard to know what to say and how to help, base and community support has been very meaningful for the family,” said Lt. Col. Kathryn Shaw, 375th AMDS commander. A community donation page was set up for them in which 1,500 people raised $96,000 for the family.
