If the caller ID says “Village of Glen Carbon,” don’t necessarily believe it.
The Glen Carbon Police Department has warned that one of the village’s phone numbers has been “spoofed” — stolen by scammers to be used for telemarketing calls. Police warn that if you receive a call from 618-288-2664, which shows as “Village of Glen Carbon,” and offers you a chance to “lower your interest rates,” it is a scam call.
“At this time, this is the only phone number we know to be compromised,” police said in a statement posted on the department’s Facebook page.
Residents are reminded never to share personal or financial information over the phone. A true government agency will never ask you to provide such information by phone.
