Alton man gets 50 years for murdering cousin

A Madison County man received a 50-year prison sentence Tuesday for the 2011 murder of his cousin.

Damond Riddlespriger, 24, of Alton was convicted in January in connection with the murder of his cousin, 22-year-old Marlon Poindexter, an announcement from Madison County State’s Attorney Thomas Gibbons stated.

According to court records, Riddlespriger, who was 20 at the time of the murder, got into a car with Poindexter and two others on July 11, 2011. Riddlespriger was sitting in the seat behind Poindexter, who was in the driver seat, when he shot him once in the back of the head. Poindexter was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators learned in their investigation that Riddlespriger was upset over Poindexter’s relationship with a woman both men knew.

Riddlespriger will serve 25 years for the murder and another 25 years for his use of a firearm, the announcement stated.

“Damon Riddlespriger murdered his cousin in cold blood,” Gibbons said. “He deserves to be in prison where he can no longer be a threat to his community or his own family.”
